it's been in widespread US (I don't know about the
UK...) use since at least the 70's, and the general
acceptance of its implied meaning makes its use
perfectly acceptable.
And not nearly as confusing. As you said, most people,
including me, had no idea the verb "think" could be
used as a noun.
The phrase, 'you've got another think coming,' is a lot older than the
1970s, and for its ungrammatical nature it makes more sense than 'you've
got another thing coming.'
