I'm no med student, but ISTR that damage to the vas is a far more common
cause for this than damage to the testes. If that is the case here
couldn't
a fertility specialist collect enough viable sperm directly from the
testes
for an in vitro procedure? Granted, any in vitro is expensive and the
additional procedure would only increase it, but it would be physically
possible.

For the diagnosis of a "low sperm count," the patient would have 20
million sperm cells per milliliter (ml).  In other words, there's more to
what leaves the body than sperm cells.  Genma didn't have any difficulty
producing a sample - there just wasn't any sperm in it.  More to be
explained as the story progresses.

By the way, I researched costs of lab tests - about $125.00.  There is
also a home test kit available in the U.S.  I have no idea if there is an
equivalent in Japan.
