Well... I decided to post this to the FFML after all. Heh.
Just now catching up on a month's worth of fics off the FFML, started on
this one...
I may revise my opinion after I read further installments (I've just now
read this), but the biggest problem I have with this so far is the rather
blatant plagiarism of Careful Destiny by Todd Hill. The alternate world you
have this Ranma going to is, with a very few exceptions, EXACTLY the
altverse Ranma finds himself in in that story.
It doesn't say much for an author when they plagiarize alternate-universe
fanfic scenarios, even if they are adding their own spin and plot to what
another author already came up with.
Again, I may change my mind about that when I get further in, but I'm
starting off with a fairly negative view toward your plagiarism.
More comments later...
*Sigh*. Second prologue's author's notes. The two worlds are similar
because of a similar initial change, specifically Ranma not being a martial
artist/going on the training trip. Other than the direct consequences of
this, the similarities are pretty much limited to two things, Ranko and
Gosunkugi.
Ranko is there (from an author's perspective, not from a chronological
one) because Ranma needs a guide of sorts, someone who can tell him about his
'other self' and who he can trust with the truth. That means a sibiling. As
for the name 'Ranko'... let's just say that I wasn't feeling teribly
creative, so I used a modified version of Ranma's female name.
Gosunkugi is Ranma's best friend in the other world because I wanted to
drive in how pathetic alt-Ranma is, and it was the best way I could think of.
This Gosunkugi bears a good deal more resemblance to canon Gos than CD's Gos,
and his only real role in the plot is just that: to show just what alt-Ranma
is like (Take Gos, subtract the obsessions with Akane and voodoo/magic. You
now have alt-Gos).
