I asked that same question about a year ago on the r.a.a.f. newsgroup,
the answer was that it was never mention in the anime or English translation
of the manga, but there was a Japanese source or article that gave her the
name Kimiko. I have some doubts on the authenticity of this, since it is
also the most common fanfic name as well. But it could be true.

My own opinion on this runs counter to that of Rob B. If you have a
different name in mind or one you need to use due to the plot (like another
anime character in a cross-over role) then use that. But if you just want
'A' name, then use Kimiko! It may be clich, but it makes your story seem
more real to use a name that everyone is familiar with. Some people think
there is something lazy, dishonest, or inferior in using fan fiction clichs
but that isn't true. Clichs of any type can be misused or over used. That
does not make a clich wrong or bad. If you want to convey a certain message
or image that has a clich to it then use it. Starting a fairy tale with "A
long, long time ago in a kingdom (or galaxy) far, far away..." cues in the
reader to that it is a fairy tale and has them already visualizing in their
mind the appropriate mental images and expectations with out spending
several paragraphs or more telling the reader that its years ago, in a
kingdom, in a distant land, and it is a story with a magical or supernatural
plotline (i.e. "fairy" tale)

Of course using too many clichs is bad, they should be used sparingly and
in the right context. Example: "Raining Cats and dogs" works well as dialog
(i.e. Ranma: "I'm not goin' out, its rainin' ca..ca..cats and dogs!") but as
descriptive narrative it IS lazy writing. But (to get back on topic), if
you just need a name for Mrs. Tendo, and she is the loving, kind mother of
fan fic clich, using Kimiko tells us that without having to spend too much
time telling us that (again).

I'm looking for the name of Akane's mother. I don't know whether or not
her
name is ever mentioned in the series (I'm thinking not, as I'm fairly well
read in Ranma, and I don't remember ever hearing it), but if it was, or
you
just have a good suggestion, I would really appreciate any responses.
