But the ship _was_ the Robert Goddard.  What was wrong
with that name?  Surely that's _more_ politically
neutral.

Within hours, the United Nations directed that the Robert 
Goddard, a large scale cargo vessel that traveled between
Earth and the very small colony on the Jovian moon Gaymede,
was hereby drafted into service and recommissioned 
as the Sol Alliance Ship Saint Christopher.

The U.N. named a ship "Saint Christopher"?
Why not? The patron saint of travellers and no baggage like
most explorers/travellers.
Much more politically safe than calling it, say, Columbus 
or Stanley.
