Rem cuddled Vash on her lap, letting him lean against her stomach as

while his eyes wandered across the artificial blue sky of the colony
ship's "park" module.

"Rem?  When did I come from?"

The corners of her lips twitched upwards.  "You mean, 'where'."

"No, 'when'.  I...I've been having some visions lately.  Memories.  I
saw this ship being built."

Her twitch inverted itself.

"The visions are scary.  So much pain and death..."

"Put them out of your mind, sweetie."  She hugged him a little tighter.
"Those memories aren't you.  They're...of your father, you could say."

"I had a father?"

"Technically.  You and Knives are clones of two brothers from Earth.
Long ago, many colonists like us fled Earth, not because Earth was
dying, but because Earth rejected them.  They landed in other systems,
and vowed to set up a society that would lock the remaining people of
Earth away from the stars.  For almost a hundred years, both sides were
content - anyone who wanted to leave Earth had already left, so neither
side desired contact.  But eventually, the children of those who stayed
became curious, and sought to re-establish contact.  The children of
those who left grew up imagining that those remaining on Earth were
monsters to be isolated at all costs, so when these brothers found a
way to tap into the interstellar communication network, two of the
outsiders' top agents traced the signal and tried to stop the
brothers."

"I...think I remember that, from the vision.  They chased us all
around."  Vash smiled.  "They were kind of cute, too, when they weren't
shooting at us."

"Perhaps.  I never saw them myself.  But the fights became more and
more damaging, until eventually entire cities would be regularly
destroyed.  Some of us were already debating building another colony
ship; this spurred us to take the designs we'd been working on and
start building as fast as we could.  As it turned out, we made it away
only hours before all life on Earth ceased.  Just to spite your
pursuers, someone cloned your bodies and tried to copy your minds, just
before we left.  I'm kind of glad the mind copy didn't work too well:
it was enough of a shock finding you, and I'm not sure we could have
handled having two more adults around."  Rem mussed Vash's hair, only
to look in muted wonder as it stuck back up again around her fingers.
"But I have to wonder...if you and Knives made it aboard, are Kei and
Yuri among our frozen friends?"
