The above, though, is a personal pet peeve of mine.  Why do people use
these silly characters to deliniate thoughts and signs?  Go find any
decent book and open it.  You won't find anything like that--so I've never
understood why it persists in fanfiction.  A script-format throwback?

I agree with you mostly, but this is not 100% true.  There are a number of
books out there where thoughts are represented by italics.  however, I think
this is probably more of a manga throwback than anything related to
script-format.  However, manga is a visual medium... fanfic is NOT, and
should not be treated as such.
