In a perfect world I would have told you what was bothering me; in a
perfect world I would have been able to honestly talk to you about
our problems like I wanted to. But I've learned long ago that the
world isn't perfect.

I can hear our imaginary conversation in my head even as we walk home
in complete silence. "Why do you have to ignore me every time we're
around others?" I'd ask. Don't you know it took what remained of my
pride to even come up to you to talk at the party? It was going so
well; I thought we'd finally have a moment without interruptions for
once. But then you had to leave for some stupid reason or another,
and I kept sitting there waiting for you to come back so that we
could continue what we were doing.

But you never did.

Instead I found that bimbo cuddling against you, leading me to wonder
if I've just been too blind up till now to see what was happening
between the two of you. Even my friends were starting to comment on
your constant nearness. So in retaliation I ignored you, too. I
ducked out whenever you came into the room and didn't look into your
eyes when -despite my best efforts-- we somehow ended up face-to-face
anyway.

I wonder if you even noticed what I was doing.

In response to my accusation you'd deny it, just like you always do.
You'd cite the time we peacefully exchanged ideas without the usual
interruptions, ignoring the fact that it only happened because I
foolishly put my pride on the line.

I hear a sigh and I look up, wondering if you even have an inkling of
what you did wrong. But you simply stare back at me with that
downtrodden look of yours. "What did I do this time, Akane?" You ask,
sounding tired.

I shake my head and look away. "Forget about it."

"No, really, I wanna hear it."

"I said forget about it!" I growl, feeling some of the repressed
anger bubbling dangerously above the surface.

What's the use of even telling you what's wrong, anyway? It's not
like anything is going to change. Telling you isn't going to make you
grow a spine after years of letting the others have their way with
you; nor will it lead me to naively think that you'll start paying
more attention to me for all eternity.

So we'll continue ignoring our problems, confident that everything
will be forgiven in a couple of hours like usual. In the morning
we'll fall back into our usual roles, and it will be like this whole
incident never even happened.

Sometimes I wonder if that's always going to be enough.
