All right. I give up. What the hell is Xero? Is this an
anime, an underground comic or just something you made up?

Something I made up. It's basically a compilation of various 'Giant
Robot Shows' [Gundam, Evangelion, Nandisesco, etc.]

What's the background on this fusion or xover or whatever this
story is?

The basic premise is that Earth is being invaded by aliens that use
mechs or giant robots. After a failed invasion, the Earth managed to get
ahold of the tecnology required to make these mechs. Unfortunately, they
can only be piloted by humans if they are young girls. [Similar to
Evangelion] I'd say more, but I don't want too many plot elements coming
out just yet.

It's awfully hard to give a frigging leap about the characters
when you don't understand the context of the setting.

True, but I'm trying to take my time with this one and do it right. The
plot should become much clearer in the next few chapters. It kind of
starts in the middle of things. [Like in Nandisesco or Evangelion.] Giant
robots and explosions. If you think this is confusing, try watching some
episodes of Gundam Wing. You absolutely can't start watching that show
from anywhere but the beginning without getting completely lost. I'm
trying not to get too confusing, but things should be a little vauge at
the start of a fic like this one. Just like in the style of anime it's
based on. [Not Ranma, a Giant Robot Show.] The special powers and origins
of the characters and the machines they pilot are usually revealed during
the course of the story instead of being explained early on.

Thanks.
