Yes! Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES! Finally, I have a fanfic that gives Rei
justice! Ironically, I also posted a chapter of my own fic tonight, saying
a the end of the chapter that I felt Rei has never been given justice.
Thank you, Mr. David Perini, for proving me wrong!
This short, one-shot, plot-less, angst-telling story is ideal, exemplary,
and is now a role-model to my future fanfic writing efforts. Reading
through it, I found no grammatical or spelling errors, just a short, simple,
and wonderful tell.
As far as character goes, I cannot honestly say that Rei was portrayed
perfectly. But then, my largest gripe is where she "emitt[ed] a soft moan
... buried her head in a pillow, [and] wish[ed] her life
was over." I can't imagine Rei moaning in the state she was in. In other
words, David has shot two bullets at a tree and created a single hole. Well
done.
If I ever wrote something like this, I'd have to say it would have taken me
time and much re-reading. I believe that the same applied to David, at
least as far as thought went.
What I really like about this fic is that somewhere by the end it shows the
type of tragedy in Rei that is so attractive. Actually, the process of
showing this is pretty clear, which is a plus to Mr. Perini. The little bit
at the end with Shinji's actions and thoughts, well ... I'm not sure that
was needed. For a Rei-head, that bit would not detract from the overall
story, whereas an Asuka-fan might turn away from that part a little (or a
lot, in some cases).
I have never read any other work by Mr. David, and if this is his first,
then I think we've got a bright mind on our hands. Well done, bravo, and
please, encore.
As I write this feedback on the FanFic Mailing List, I'm saving this text,
because when the final draft arrives, I'm posting a review of this fic on my
website as soon as possible.
I have much more I can say, but most of it would seem blatant, so I'll end
here. Besides, I must go to bed soon, at any rate.
