OK, I admit.  Now I'm _really_ confused...

Maybe I'm just unusually dense, but for the life of me I can't figure out why the characters, particularly Akane, are acting the way they're acting.  Obviously, it's an altaverse, but I'm just not seeing what the impetus for the behavior of Akane and the other students is.
