First, there was the ice. Then, came the storm. And I was the third.
I am the fire.
There is a reason the creatures known as humans call my brothers and I
'Legendary'. Before all else, before all life known as 'Pokemon', there
were the three of us. We were there when the first primitive life crawled
out of the ocean. When the heavy-shells died out because they could not
bear their own weight, we wept. When the jealous earth bore a child into
the wind to rival us, we forced it into slumber. When the red-skinned
lizards were threatened by their wild predators, I burned their tails with
my fire, and gave them the power to defend themselves.
When the humans began creating their world on ours, and their 'science'
geared itself toward mastery of the creatures we protected, we were
concerned; after time passed, and we saw that the humans would be
beneficial to our wards, we slept, entrusting the world to them. From time
to time, we return, as needed; each of us has left something of ourselves
as a token. The eldest gives the winter snow, the second made the
thunderstorms.
I gave the flame eternal. The flame entrusted to those who truly understand
the spirit of Pokemon, those with the strong heart to rise up and meet any
challenge. Every year, they gather to test their power and their faith, and
every year, my flame inspires all, human and Pokemon alike, to do their
best.
It is sad that not all share the strong spirit that compelled me to give
this gift of my flame. Many of them do not understand the true connection
between human and Pokemon. They see it as a game of possession, a contest
to show that they are superior. Courage and spirit are overshadowed by
arrogance and greed.
Often, I find myself wondering if perhaps we were wrong about the humans
after all. Especially now, as I watch in sadness as my flame is treated as
little more than a trophy, a testament to their ability to put selfish
desires above the hopes and dreams of everyone else.
But always, when I find myself doubting my faith in these beings, one rises
up and proves that there are still those with strong hearts.
This one who stands now, in defiance of the greed and selfishness of the
three who have stolen my flame. His very life is in danger, and yet he
stands firm, prepared to sacrifice himself for the spirit of fairness, for
his dreams and the dreams of all assembled here.
They try to destroy him with my flame. My eternal flame of hope. What
fools. My flame would never burn one such as this.
I awaken to protect this brave young human, this courageous dreamer. He has
reaffirmed my belief in all who live, human and Pokemon alike. He still has
much to learn, and far to go before he can fulfill his dreams, but I, the
blaze eternal, know that he will succeed, and will achieve greatness, no
matter what dangers lie in store. His heart is strong and pure, his courage
and determination inextinguishable.
He has the fire within.
