HI,
I am making one public reply to this message. ^_^
(I don't want to start a 'banned' thread)
Plagiarism is a difficult legal concept that I do not
feel competent to discuss. I will only point out that
fan fiction as a whole appears to fall
into a very' grey area.

My central comment concerns the original post by Mr.
Walker. While not disagreeing with what appeared to
be his perfectly natural bias against writing another
authors words as one's one I do disagree with
his methods. For either public or private posting his
words seemed very intemperate. He could have said the
same thing, with even greater
effect, using less inflammatory language.

IMO nothing is gained and much is lost in common
civility using harsh and accusatory language. IMO it
is much better to rebuke someone privately' at first.
If, then, after a civil discussion maters can not be
resolved it is then time to proceed to a public forum,
still in a calm reasoned manner.

If I have misunderstood or mis-represented either Mr.
Walker or Mr. Corley I apologize.

^_^

First, I'd like to say my memory is mostly shot,
although I have an
uncanny knack for recalling almost anything I've
ever read.That's why I
took this as a double shock...

Octavian: I rushed out to the local Manga store
and took a look.

    <Snip>In Chibi-Pop Manga Vol.1 No.1, a short
story called "The Coast
Guard" </Snip>

"The Coast Guard (TCG)" Does, in fact, bear
striking resemblance to
'Incompletion'. Ok, fine.. They're almost twins.
However, I was not
attempting to plagiarize. 'Incompletion' was just
one of the many fics I've
written in the 3 and 4 o'clock AM waste-land the
standard college student
calls 'free-time'. The only conclusion that I could
draw was I probably
read "TCG" once, then forgot about it, only to
semi-rewrite it again a few
days/weeks/?s later. I really want to apologize for
this, and I ask you all
to relabel it as an Alt. Universe for 'TCG". Please
don't brand me as a
plagiarist for a simple, sleep-hazed mistake. Well,
you can, but I am
asking you not to.

    Since I didn't buy that issue of Chibi-Pop, I
had no way of verifying
Octavian's claim until I drove 5 miles to get to the
dang comic shop. I
didn't want to post this apology on the FFML, since
I've already started
enough spam/canon wars for one year.. but the
original thread has already
been responded to.

Again: I want to say 'Incompletion' was not
intended to be a 'blatant
rip off', as Chad Walker so kindly put it. Just a
mistake. A mistake which,
I might add, is causing me to go through everything
else I thought I had
started as an original idea.. The only true
Originals I can be sure of are
"ShadowGazer", "That Which Is My Life", and "Enter,
Damnnation", and none
of them are even semi-semi-wannabe-completed.

Sorry for the post and thank you for reading.

            -JJ Corley
