Well, the results are in. A quick reminder, it wasn't he totals that
decided which choice I would write, but the reasons given for the choice,
but I thought you would enjoy seeing what the totals are, so the final
score, for those who are intersted, is:
A) Run and hide: 5
B) Run for help: 2
C) Attack Genma: 9
And now I shall regretfully cast my vote for 'C' as well. Why
regretfully? I really wanted to write A.
Why did I want to write A? Simple, conflict. Conflict is what drives a
good story, and the more personal the confict, the more it touches the
readers. The conflict of Akane turning and running into her room,
betraying her ideals, would have been delicous to write, but I didn't
feel I could justify it. I'll be honest, I expected to write C. I knew
several excellent reasons would come in for Akane to attack Genma and I
wasn't disapponted. They ranged from brief psyological analysises to a
breakdown of Akane's actions in various storylines. Yep, I was already
to write C, so imange my surpirse when several good reason for A came in.
The two biggest reason were: 1) I had already changed this Akane. Even
I didn't realize it, but I had established that this Akane fears this
Genma, even if only a little. 2) Akane is, in the time frame I
established (3-13 days since Ranma's arrival for those who had missed
it), still a sheltered 16 year-old girl. She knows right and wrong, but
she has never had her convictions tested and this is a horrific test of
them. Akane will turn and run into her room.
What would have happened if she hadn't? Well, if she had turned and run
screaming down the hall, not only would her family been alerted, but so
would have Genma. Genma would have had time to untie and dress Ranma.
With the physical evidence gone, it would have been Akane's word agasint
his, and Ranma would have backed up his father. (For those who missed
it, Ranma has been abused for years, the Juysenko curse just lets Genma
abuse him in new ways.) The result is that Genma would have known that
Akane was spying on them, and he just couldn't let that stand.
The other choice, storm in and attack Genma, would have had less
disasterous results, but more painful ones. Akane would have gotten in
several good attacks having caught Genma with his <cough, cough> pants
down, but the outcome wasn't in question. She would lose and take
several injuries, including a broken eye socket and internal bleeding (I
warned you, it was dark). As a result Soun would go ballistic on Genma,
sending his daughter's attacker to the hospital as well. He honor his
former friend's agreement and Ranma and Akane's engagement would hold,
but the wedding pressure would be off. Unfortunately, Genma would escape
from the hospital. Akane's battle with him wasn't over.
Part 2 should be out sometime next week, provided I get my days off from
work. It, like part 1, will give you people a choice as to Akane's
actions. I plan on making this a regular feature of this story line. If
someone wishes to explore one of my alternate paths, contact me. Lastly,
good luck and fortune to you all.
