A Urusei Yatsura Fanfiction

*************************************************

Nineteen Years ago...

"You ignoble, insignificant, runt bastard!! Do you know with whom you are
dealing?! Do you know who I am?" Despite the imperious tone to his voice,
it was quite obvious, the speaker was on his last legs. His frame shook as
he stood in the middle of the deserted park and the reason for his body's
quiver had nothing to do with the chill March wind which blew incessantly.

"You, oni, are an abomination. Unfit to walk amongst men. Now be still,
while I put your wayward soul to rest .....in the abyss. Your
rapaciousness ends this night," answered the diminutive monk.

The oni quickly looked rapacious up in his pocket dictionary, the
description seemed to fit. Though his opponent towered over him, the monk
knew the day was his. He already held one of the oni's horns in his hand.
He could feel power flowing from it. The demon's last horn was dangling
precariously, hanging by a sinew of flesh.

For a final time, the oni cursed his luck. He had been resting in the
park, extremely weakened by a previous battle with a much more worthy foe,
when the accursed monk happened by. He would have been completely
imperceptible to any ordinary human, but it was his luck that a damned
Buddhist monk crossed his path. 'WHERE WAS SHE?' he screamed in his mind,
while scanning his surroundings, being sure to keep the monk in his field
of view. "Did the slut that hatched you give you a name or was it by a
coven, you were named," the oni said with haggard breath, beginning to
accept his fate. She would not arrive in time.

"I am called Sakurambo, Cherry to my friends. You beast, may call me 'the
victor'," Cherry prepared for a final strike, which would forever vanquish
the demon's pitiable spirit from this plane. It was all so dramatic. The
demon wondered what movie of the week all this sappy dialogue was coming
from. He decide to play his part.

"I think.... I shall call you deranged instead. It is more fitting," after
saying this the oni began to laugh, uncontrollably. It wasn't so much the
priest's name, but the absurdity of the whole situation. Though his
appearance was that of a slight of built human male in his mid twenties,
who had seen better days, a horn hanging from his mane of brown hair, his
clothes bloody, he was still one of the more powerful and resourceful of
demons. He had fought and killed, raped and murdered more times than he
could remember. He was centuries old, part of a nobility. He had survived
countless wars, and stood against demigods. Now he would meet his end at
the hands of an imp, not even five feet tall. He Loved It!!! The whole
irony of it. It was just like that David and Goliath thingy centuries ago.
Made a bundle on that one. Say what you want about God, but he is one
helluva fight promoter. Kami-sama is also undisputed king of practical
jokes.

'I do so love a good joke... even when its on me,' he thought, his
laughter receding into a rather sinister grin. "Just as long as someone
was having fun. Let's make it more interesting," he said aloud, black
lightning arcing from his outstretched right hand. Cherry nimbly dodged
the strike, though it was difficult to see with evening descending, and
pulled some wards from within his robes to bind the demon in place. Cherry
carried wards around like a teenager would carry condoms in his wallet.
Hey, you never know. However, it looked as though they wouldn't be
necessary, as the demon dropped to one knee, its energy spent. Cherry
haphazardly tossed the wards at the oni, rushing to deliver a mortal blow
with his staff. The wards missed, the staff struck home. The beast fell
prone to the ground, a substance similar to blood, or was it blood,
flowing from its mouth, nose, and ears, in addition to the hole where a
proud horn once stood. Cherry stood triumphantly at the head of the fallen
beast, for once with the chance of looking down on someone. He began an
incantation which would forever seal this evil away. Despondently, the
once proud oni raised his head, when something caught his eye. He hid his
smile well.

"You may not know it, but it is quite the feat you've achieved this night,
Cherry. May I call you Cherry? I recall you saying only friends may call
you that," he just had to stall a little bit longer. "Many a soul has
sought the honor of my death, and for the most trifling of reasons too!!
'You killed my son', 'You ate my dinner', 'You destroyed our village',
'You ate my dog', 'You raped my wife, mother, daughters, sisters and
cousins' , 'Waaah, waaaah, waaah'. Have you ever heard such measly
excuses?! Well, maybe the dinner and dog I could understand," the oni gave
a toothy grin, she was in range now. Best to be sure. The gleam returned
to one of his blood shot eyes.

"Enough of your talk. You will no longer murder innocent women and
children."

"Now just a minute!!" the oni answered angrily. "I have never harmed a
hair on the head of a woman. Why would I want to? It would be such a
waste. I can think of much more interesting things to do with them," the
oni's smile grew even more sinister.

"You don't consider rape, as harming a woman."

"I never said I raped women. I said I was accused of it. All I did was
introduce them to the wonderful world of me! They should have of been
honored, not every women can say they've had that experience, though I do
try my best to get around."

"Whether they wanted it or not."

"Oh, they loved it. How could they not? I am quite experienced, and
knowledgeable in various techniques. You should have of heard them scream
out in passion, or was it pain? Naaaw, I'm sure it was as much a pleasure
for them as it was for me. Perhaps even more so. A priestess once said I
was the most lecherous creature in the universe. I showed her she was
right. I mean everybody '69's these days, but can they hit the
hydraulics," mused the oni, any moment now he would make his move.

"You disgust me," Cherry said as he shook his head. He had to remind
himself, that it was a demon before him, and not some young man who was
speaking of women with such disregard in this day and age.

Closer. Closer. Stall. Stall. "Too bad there are no witnesses to your
deed. You don't have a camera on you do you? You could use mine, but I'm
out of film. Which reminds me, I've got some pretty choice pictures of
choice ladies in all kinds of choice situations. You can have them. Maybe
you should write a book? Hey!! Did you know, if you tag an oni's horns,
they got to give you a wish? O'course you'd have to come a little closer."

"My only wish is to banish you from our world," Cherry said preparing to
crush the oni's skull with his staff. He slowly raised it above his head
and aimed at the point the devil's final horn hung from his head.

"LOOK, A BABE!!!" the oni shouted. Cherry was unwavering, his staff
beginning its downward arc. "...CARRYING A POT OF SUKIYAKI," the demon
completed hurriedly.

"WHERE???!!" shouted Cherry, stopping the staff an inch from its target
and looking in all directions. The oni let out an audible sound of relief.

"THERE!!!" he shouted and would have pointed, but his one good arm was
busy reaching up to grab his remaining horn. He rent it from its place and
closed his eyes in concentration. His hand glowed a dull white. Just as
Cherry was returning his attention to the task at hand, the demon threw
the horn at him with the last of his strength. Cherry bent over backwards
at the waist to avoid the toss. It was quite painful. It was in this
position, of a perfect arch, that to his horror, Cherry saw the true
target of the attack. A young woman, obvious with child, lay unconscious
on the ground.

"TOP OF THE WORLD MA!! TOP OF THE WORLD!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAAA"

"Even with your dying act, you seek to torment. Do you not fear God?!!
Return to Hell!" with that said he drove his mystic staff into the fallen
oni's skull. It exploded into indistinguishable pieces of bone and flesh.
He then ran to the young woman's side. She had already regained
consciousness and was in a sitting position, trying to shake the cobwebs
from her head. Her black out lasting only a moment. Cherry quietly checked
her for signs of possession. Discovering none, he asked "Are you all
right? You don't feel anything.... strange do you?"

The young woman blinked a couple of times and then placed a hand to the
side of her head. "I...I.. believe so. Just feel a little dizzy is all.
You see this is my first child."

"Congratulations, Misses...."

"Moroboshi....Mrs. Moroboshi. Thank you for your help, but I'm feeling
fine now. I'd better be getting home before it gets too much darker, my
husband will be worried. Thanks again."

It was with a sigh of relief that Cherry watched Mrs. Moroboshi head in
the opposite direction of the headless corpse. He had no idea what the
devil had thrown at him or if his target had been him or the woman. She
showed no signs of being under the demon's influence, and he sensed no
evil about her. In fact, her child had given off quite a strong aura of
peace and tranquillity. Perhaps the oni's final act of desperation had
failed, still the woman bore observation. Cherry looked down at the small
horn he held in his hand. It looked so innocuous, so innocent. One could
even say cute. Cherry knew full well its appearance belied its true
terror. He began the grim job of searching for the second horn. Only a
moment had passed, his job just begun, when he heard a scream that could
wake the dead. It had been his greatest fear, that the young woman would
return for some reason and see the grizzly scene, or that some other
innocent would happen by. He had not considered a far worse scenario. It
was with a great deal of effort, that Cherry forced himself from his squat
position and turned to face the newcomer. He did not know why, but
suddenly he was deathly afraid. Soon glowing green eyes gave him all the
reason in the world, to fear for his very soul.

"You........ You did this," it was a statement, not a question. The voice
was flat, completely devoid of emotion, but feminine.... definitely
feminine.

Cherry suspected by the tone of her voice that the woman was in shock.
Seeing a headless corpse could do that to anybody, he surmised. It was
well into night now and the park was not well lit. He could only see a
shadowy outline of a woman. But those eyes. Perhaps they were merely
reflecting the light much like a cat's or dog's eyes would. 'It's rare
among people, but it does happen,' he thought trying to allay his fears.
"I know this looks extremely horrible to you, Miss, and what I am about to
say may seem unbelievable, but I assure you, it is the truth. What lies
slain here is the body of an evil and insidious oni. If you will continue
to watch, it will soon become dust, thus confirming my statement."

Actually, what he had done was confirm her fear. Her eyes shut tightly.
Her long hair took on a life of its own. The beating of her heart, which
had stopped when she first came upon the scene, now raged. Building.

Everything went quiet. The wind died to nothing. It was if everyone and
everything else in the world had disappeared, only Cherry standing before
the slain oni's body and the woman remained. For what seemed like an
eternity to Cherry, she stood there.

"I... I got here as soon as I could. I only stopped for a second."

'What is she talking about,' Cherry thought to himself, somewhat confused
now.

"When I heard the fight, I stopped fuc... I stopped and rushed here as
fast as I could."

Cherry could feel the tension, the emotion, building in her. He remained
motionless, transfixed....

************************************

Present Day.

No matter where he looked, it was death that looked back at him. No
escape, none whatsoever. In every direction, pain. He was completely
surrounded. 'In retrospect, I probably should have jumped out that window,

' he thought to himself, but there was no point dwelling in the past, it
was the immediate future, that was in jeopardy now.

"You won't get away with it this time, Moroboshi! We have cut off every
avenue of escape. My forces control the area for a three block radius. Let
the woman go!"

'Thanks for stating the obvious, Mendou.' The hovering gunships buzzing
the school and the echelon of tanks made it abundantly clear, Ataru's time
had come. They pulled out all the stops, today. His eyes traversed the
crowd, as he shifted his burden slightly. Yup, looked like everyone he
knew had come by to say hello.

Benten sat on her airbike, some meters away from him, Oyuki riding next to
her. Benten hefted bazookas on both shoulders, following his every
movement. All in all, he wasn't to concerned with her. She was just as
likely to hit her compatriots, as she was of hitting him. Oyuki is another
matter entirely.

'They both look pissed. I couldn't of been that bad.'

Ran, also with bazooka in hand, stood at the head of a mob of girls. They
were blocking one of the few exits off the school's roof. Guarding the
other exit was Megane, his lieutenants at his back. They stood at the
front of a pack of heavily armed boys, all sporting similar looks of
outrage.

"You've finally done it this time. What you have done is completely beyond
forgiveness. You will, at last, receive the punishment you deserve.
Perhaps, if you release your hostage, we will show mercy."

"You're just jealous you could never pull something like this off, Megane.
I merely achieved what is the goal of every man here! For that alone, I am
being punished. For being a man in the prime of his youth! What a dark
world we live in today, when such a simple thing as a kiss, can cause such
manevolence. I pray for your souls," Ataru said bowing his head. 'But as
much as I hate to admit it, you may be right for once. I don't see a way
out of this.'

"Ataru, how could you do it?"

Ataru gave Shinobu a puzzled look. "You've known me the longest, Shinobu.
You should know the answer to that question by now. You, at least, should
have figured it out."

Shinobu was somewhat taken aback by the seriousness of his tone. She stood
confused and unsure for a moment, but only for a moment.

"'Tis the nature of man, and it's easy, when you're as virile as I am,"
replied Ataru, the playfulness returning to his voice, the leer to his
eyes. With a grin on his face, he moved to put the finishing touches on
what was proving to be one birthday to remember.

Inches away from the final goal, Sakura and Cherry approached him from
either side. Leaping over the diminutive Cherry, and sidestepping past
Sakura's assault, Ataru soon found himself with his back to the ledge of
the school's roof.

"The reason he acts this way is because he is sick." That brought out a
round of head nodding. "It's always like this when his sickness manifest
itself." Glowing in anger and betrayal, Lum continued, "Darling,..... GET
AWAY FROM HER!!" She, as well as Jariten floating at her side, readied
what would probably be lethal blasts.

It had been one helluva go. He looked down at the sleeping Ryuunosuke in
his arms. She was the only one left in a masterful run. He had known as
soon as he awoke this morning, that today would be special. Through skill,
chance, or destiny he had managed to steal kisses from most of the girls
in his class, and some who weren't in his class. Ryuunosuke was the last.
How she had managed to sleep through out the chaotic chase, jostling in
his arms, people screaming and yelling, Ataru couldn't figure. He took it
as testament to his girl hunting skills. He bent down to complete what he
started.

"DARLING!!"

Looking up, he met her eyes, and for an instant, they both shared equal
looks of sorrow, longing and regret. It could have ended there, but it
didn't. Once more, a salacious look returned to his face. He kissed
Ryuunosuke, deep.

That woke her up. An Upper-cut and right-cross later, found Ataru
teetering over the side of the roof as Ryuunosuke made clear of ground
zero. He had just found his balance, when.....

"DIVINE.......OPEN FIRE...... DIE....... ATTACK..... RETRIBUTION!!!!"

It was not with a look of resignation, that Ataru sought to meet his
maker. He stood tall in the face of the total onslaught.

"TOP OF THE WORLD MA! TOP OF THE WORLD! HAHAHAHAHAAAAHHAA"

Darkness........nothing he wasn't used to.

*What did you do to us this time?* It was a child's voice.

*Nothing any red blooded Japanese man wouldn't do.*

*We need to talk.*

======================

When the smoke cleared, Ataru's blackened and unconscious form lay at the
foot of the high school's steps. The blast having blown him off the roof
to the concrete below. It was Cherry, who reached the body first. Taking
out his prayer beads, he knelt before the fallen young man.

"Rest in peace, wayward soul. Leave this world, and its temptations.
Find........"

A tearful Lum, having batted Cherry from her path, approached the still
unmoving Ataru. When she reached the point that Cherry had been, she lost
all composure. He lay with his back to the ground, his head resting on the
last step. Eyes closed. From a distance, it look as if he were merely
sleeping. Up close, it was clear that was not the case. Hair on one side
of his head was matted down by blood, which formed a small pool to the
base of his neck. His left leg was in an obviously unnatural position. It
was difficult for her to look at his charred body, but neither could she
turn away. She was certain he was dead. She let out a wail, collapsing
over his corpse.

As she cry, a not so small crowd forms around her. Despite what one might
think, the people of Tomobiki are not heartless, which is what one would
have to be, not to feel remorse at the scene before them. Everyone lowered
their head in prayer, and wished Ataru some measure of peace.
