In response to the requests for fanfics involving not so prominent
series, I'm sending this in. It was written back in June, and I was
waiting for some feedback from Avatar, which, unfortunately has not
arrived. this is a bit dark, as it features some graphic violence (blood
and guts). this something I normally don't do, but, as I'm dealing with
Guyver here, works out okay.

One last note: the beginning of this was borrowed from the first issue
of Viz's translation of the Eva manga. this was not intended as a form
of plagerism, but was used to explain how Shinji thinks in this
story.

As always, C&C, MST's, flames, etc. can be sent to cyber_com@hotmail.com
or now at my new address; ashe@centuryinter.net

===============================================================================================

I've never had any cherished dreams or ambitions.

I don't aspire to any career or profession in the future.

So far, in the first fourteen years of my life, things have always
happened as they had to
happen. And things will probably continue in the same way.

That's why I've never really cared whether I got into an accident or
something and died.

from an essay by Shinji Ikari.

 >SLAM!<

"Just what the hell is this anyway, Ikari!?" shouted the sensei, a
throbbing vein
pulsing on his forehead.

"My essay?" replied Ikari, not even glancing at the paper sitting on
his desk.

"You don't say. And just why is it that I get the impression that you
aren't taking this or
anything seriously!?"

"Perhaps it's because I don't." said Ikari, not even looking at the
sensei.

 "What!? WAAAAAUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHHHNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" screamed the
sensei, pulling his hair out while his right eye twitched involuntarily.

Most of the students stared at the sensei in shock. But not all. From
the back of the
classroom, a blue-haired girl stared at Ikari, a deep melancholy in her
eyes. Ikari continued
to stare out into space, not even noticing the sensei's tantrum.

The final bell rang, heralding the end of school for the day.

(I'm getting too old for this.) thought Ryoji Kaji as he drove the
truck through the western
suburbs of Tokyo. (This is too much. I'm not even thirty, and I'm
already thinking of
retirement. I wonder where my enthusiasm for this work went? Maybe it's
just today's job
that's making me think this way.) He shook his head miserably, and
concentrated on the
road for a while.

Slowing the truck down, he made the first stop on his itinerary, and
watched as the
Ramoches and Praxis model Zoanoids, now in their baseline humanoid
forms, and dressed in rather stupid black white spandex uniforms.
(Whoever said that wearing spandex was a
privilege, not a right, really knew what they were saying.) Kaji thought
as he noted that one of them as his body strained the spandex about the
middle. Making a final disapproving look, he reported in that the drop
was a success.

Gunning the engine, he wove his way through the early afternoon
traffic, exchanging
rather unpleasant greetings with the other commuters. Making an exit
from the freeway, he turned onto a road that led out of the city.
Slowing down in case anyone else happened to be coming down the narrow
road, Kaji turned up the radio, noting the grunts of disapproval that
were filtered in from the back of the truck. Smirking, he turned the
radio up even further to drown out the Zoanoid's annoyance.

Twenty minutes later, he pulled off of the road, and came to a stop.
Opening the back of
the truck, several Zoanoids piled out and walked up to the driver's side
window. Kaji
regarded them, noting by identification codes on their shoulders, that
this group contained a
Taargon, several Ramoches, and a Praxis model.

The Taargon was the one that finally spoke. "What's the meaning of
this? You know that
the orders specifically ordered that this vehicle maintain a low
profile. Explain yourself!"

Smiling lazily, Kaji replied, "You boys really don't know anything, do
you?"

This set the Taargon off. "Why you--"

Kaji waved him off. "If I drove inconspicuously, people would suspect
something, and
then where would we be? Answer that for me."

Seething, Taargon made a move, and was immediately restrained by the
Praxis and a
Ramoches. "Kono...."

"Now, now... we must watch our tongues." Kaji lit a cigarette that had
hung from his
lower lip, and took a deep drag. Exhaling, he blew a large cloud of
smoke into Taargon's
face. "Or your mommy might have to wash it out." he paused, and smiled
as Taargon got
even angrier. "Oh that's right. You don't have one. That business with
the scalpel and the
test tube, wasn't it? I hear they broke the tube after they made you."

Taargon spat and grumbled under his breath.

"That's enough, children. Now run along and play, because we don't have
all day." said
Kaji, blowing a smoke ring that floated through the air, and dissipated
as it came into contact with Taargon.

The Zoanoids grumbled a bit, then turned and disappeared into the
nearby woods.

Laughing, he put out the cigarette and started the engine.

/You shouldn't provoke them, Mr. Kaji. There may come a time when you
will need their
help, or be hunted by them. Those newer models are too unpredictable, it
could be possible
they could reject their programming./

"Well, Vamore, I'll worry about that sort of thing IF it ever
happens. Not that it ever
will."

/We shall see, Mr. Kaji. We shall see./ replied Vamore.

"At least you know that was nothing more than smoke. You were human
once, as I recall." chuckled Kaji casually.

/I still am. I have only made improvements to myself./

"I wouldn't call transforming into a vaguely humanoid armadillo with a
pair of shellfish
on his shoulders human."

/You would not understand some of the.... perks of such a
transformation, Mr. Kaji./
Vamore replied slowly.

"Not that I ever want to. Here's your stop. I'm heading back, to keep
an eye on the first
unit. Call me if you need something."

 /......Understood./

The Zoanoids stepped out from the back of the truck, and quickly
disappeared. Kaji turned the truck around, and made his way back to
civilisation.

Life has always been like this for me. I guess I've always been like
this. Perhaps it's my lot in life to be like the ball in one of those
American pinball machines, bounced from bumper to bumper, never to know
any true peace.

Perhaps that's the way things are meant to be.

Let the pieces fall where they may.

 "Ikari?"

"Ikari-kun? Why do you do that to the Sensei?"

I look up see my classmate, Rei Ayanami. Like me, she is an outsider of
sorts. Yet, there
is something about her that, just barely, in the most minuscule way,
pierces my detachment
from the world. Sometimes, it makes me think, that perhaps somewhere,
out in the world,
there is another way, a place for me.

"Do you realize that he'll continue to harass you until you at least
attempt to make the
appearance of doing things their way. How do you expect to make it
through school.?"

Perhaps I should tell them all that I have seen Great Cthulhu, or speak
of Shub-Niggurath
in class.

 "Ikari? Are you even listening?"

 No. That wouldn't would do.

 "Yes, Ayanami?"

"I... don't know why I even bother talking to you."

 "I'm.... sorry. I was... thinking."

 "About what?"

Does she want something of me?

 "Life, the Universe. Insignificance."

 "Oh."

Her... disappointment? hits me with enough force to penetrate my
detachment. It's almost
as if she has a pain as great as mine. I shake it off internally,
knowing that it could never be as such.

"Is that all you want to know, Ayanami?"

 "Ah.... no. I mean.... I don't know."

She's hesitating. Almost as if there is something, but has lost her
nerve. I smile. It's a weakvone, but it seems to placate her for now.

"Ah, I, ah, I guess... I'll, ah, see you. Tomorrow that is. Good.... day
Ikari-kun."

I nod and wave her off. My motions are all mechanical. I am a robot. A
robot that acts its
way through life according to a program. But the program is incomplete.

The man ran, his breath as ragged as his clothing. Clutching the
briefcase closer to him, he tripped and stumbled into a bush. Quickly
rising, his entire body shaking with pain and
terror, he continued on his way, looking behind himself repeatedly.

Unfortunately, what he was running from was in front of him, not
behind. Not knowing
this, his flight came to an abrupt end when something stopped him, and
knocked him to the
ground.

Looking up, he gasped in terror. Standing before him was a man who
could easily be
described as being built like a brick outhouse. Dressed in a form
fitting blue/black bodysuit,
the man's face was partially concealed by a white helmet, from which he
peered down
through a pair of goggles that extended outward, tapering into a thin
lens, one for each eye.

Tugging on a pair of white gloves, he said, "Trying to run away?
Mahlmut, don't you know
that there is no escape from SEELE?"

The first man, who had been addressed as Mahlmut, stared back with
defiance and replied, "Don't ever call me Mahlmut! That's not my name! I
won't return!"

"You make me laugh. Where are the units, Mahlmut?" sneered the giant.

Mahlmut, clutched the case closer, and began to scramble backwards.
"You'll never get
them back! Never!"

The giant, who had been joined by two others, reached down to snatch
the case away from Mahlmut. Taking hold of it, he jerked it away and
opened it to inspect its contents. He and his companions gasped.
"There's only one in here!"

Mahlmut, now back on his feet, albeit unsteadily, began to laugh. "You
fools, he
knew this might happen! That's why he split them amongst the three of
us-" he stopped,
hacking and wheezing with enough force to dislodge a lung. Then,
screaming in pain, his
body contorted, exploding with gory ooze in places. And then he stopped
screaming. >Damn you, you bastards! You took my humanity! You'll pay for
that! You will pay.<

The three regarded Mahlmut with derision. The formerly decrepit man was
no more,
replaced by something even more hideous. Now towering just below seven
feet in height, hevlooked as if much of the very flesh had been removed
from his body, revealing ghastly
muscle and bone in its place. In other places, a hard, almost chitinous
shell formed an
impressive natural armor. His head was hideously distended, especially
about the face,
which ended in a maw of jagged, razor-sharp teeth. His eyes had sunken,
leaving a pair of
leering red lights, which glowed fervently with rage. Areas of his body
were covered with a thick, shaggy pelt. Fingers and toes glistened from
wickedly sharp claws.

Coming down, he took a swipe at the giant, who stepped back just in
time from being
eviscerated. Landing, he grabbed the case, which the giant had let go of
while steeping back.

The giant began to laugh, as he too, began convulse violently. With a
final hideous
scream, he stepped forward. He too had undergone a transformation. While
not as tall as
Mahlmut, he now carried the massiveness of rhinoceros. A ribbed, scaly,
green hide covered his entire body as he peered out beneath a long horn
that ran the length of his head, and kept on going for another foot and
a half, with deep set, beady eyes.

 >Mahlmut, you fool! Do you really think that you can take on me, a
Gregore-series
Zoanoid? Come and meet your death!<

Mahlmut regarded Gregore, and made his decision. Leaping, he shouted,
So be it, then. If I die today, I'll take you with me!< Opening his
toothy maw, he gagged until he disgorged a large cylindrical object.

Gregore was taken aback. >A bomb! Mahlmut, you'll pay for this!<

The two 'soldiers' who had been watching this, began to run away,
hoping to avoid the
coming explosion.

Kensuke Aida was having a great day. A few days ago, he ditched school,
and went
camping out in the mountainous forest outside of school. Here, amongst
the fields, streams, and trees, he could be himself, and act out his
fantasies. Those of a military otaku.

Although he didn't know it, he should have gone in to school today.

While there was a thrill to what he was doing, playing wargames with
yourself quickly
became something of a bore. Rolling into a bush to avoid a shot that he
had fired at himself, he came to a stop when he saw a small group of men
in uniform blueish-black bodysuits, with ping-pong ball-like helmets
which had narrow visors over each eye. Gasping, he quickly clamped his
hands over his mouth and listened to what they were talking about.

 "Any luck yet?"

"No. I'm going to check out these bushes, and then move on."

"Right. Report if you find anything."

 "Yes, sir."

Kensuke clamped his hands even tighter over his, as began turning blue
from lack of air.
His eyes grew wide as he saw the man pull away the bushes he was hiding
under.

The man smiled evilly, and said, "Well, well. It appears that I've gone
and found a
witness. Hmmm... now what should I do?"

Kensuke hoped against all hope. "Ahhh..... let him go?"

Considering this, the man put on a thoughtful look. "Maybe.... nah.
They'd make me kill
myself twice. No, I think it best that I kill you now to avoid all
that."

A scream filled the air, of which Kensuke was surprised to find was
coming from his own
mouth.

Elsewhere, another group of similarly dressed men searched for whatever
mysterious
object they had been sent out to find.

One of them, who had stopped to catch his breath, noticed a boy, who
stared at him, and
then walked off. Immediately, he accessed the comm in his helmet, and
said, "Sir, someone has spotted me. Permission to deal with the
problem?"

/What? By all means, deal with it. You have clearance to handle this.
Why are you calling
in on such a trivial nuisance?/ said Kaji, lighting another cigarette.

"Ah... because regulations say to report in all field actions? Sir?"

/....dammed bureaucrats, they wouldn't know how to run a hunt even it
came up and bit
him.../ /Just deal with it. Report in only if you need permission to
transform, got that?/

 "Ah, yessir." replied the lackey.

 /Right then. Off with you./

Smiling wickedly, the lackey turned off the comm, and slowly walked
over towards Shinji.

Not too far away, Shinji, who was too wrapped up with his own problems,
had disregarded
the strangely dressed men who were searching for something that only
they knew about.

Crossing the street, he was followed by the man. Whom unfortunately,
was promptly run
over by a small blue sports car, which skidded to a stop, passenger door
flying open in front of Shinji.

Inside the car was a woman, apparently in her mid-twenties, wearing a
black mini-dress
and a pair of visor-like skier's sunglasses.

"Come with me if you want to live!" she shouted over the roar of the
engine.

In shock by this display, all Shinji was able to say was a confused
"Whaaaa....?"

"Get in the car if you don't want to die a painful death!" shouted the
woman, clearly under
undue stress.

Looking behind him, he saw two men heading towards him, followed by a
third, who was
violently convulsing as he rose from the street. Not completely sure at
what was going on, he decided to humour the woman and get in the car.

The car peeled off before Shinji was even able to get the door closed.
However, the
momentum of the speeding car took care of that minor problem for him.

Facing the woman, he asked, "Who are you, and what is all this about?"
in a somewhat
annoyed voice.

"Oh right, where are my manners?" she said, punching herself in a mock
manner, as if to
show forgetfulness. "Hi. My name's Misato Katsuragi. What's yours?"

 "Shinji Ikari."

"My, my. Don't we live in a small world. I work for your father, or at
least I used to."
replied Misato conversationally.

Shinji glared at her. "Oh, and what has he been up to all these years?"
he asked coldly.

A small sweatdrop formed behind Misato's head. "Ano... I take it you
don't get along with
him?"

"Get along? I haven't seen the man in years, not since.... Mom
disappeared." said Shinji
sullenly, looking down at the floor.

"Ah... I see. Well, if it's any consolation, he did ask me to look out
for you, because
something weird's going on, and he didn't want you hurt."

Making a turn, a small object slid out from under the seat Shinji was
on. Picking it up, he
found it to be a refrigeration unit. Opening it, there was a short,
sharp hissing sound as
pressurized air shot out. Inside was a wheel-shaped object, the middle
of which contained a small, gleaming chrome orb. Around it, held in
place by battered metal plating, was
something.... that moved.

 "Aaaah!"

"Be careful with that! It's a rare artifact that your father entrusted
to my protection."

 "W-what is i-it?"

"I don't know. All I do know is that it's very old, and that it's
called 'Evanguyverlion'."

"Evanguyverlion." replied Shinji, pulling it out of its case.

Misato pulled out of the outskirts of the city, and turned onto a back
mountain road that
would lead them to safety. Relaxing now that they were apparently out of
danger, slowed
down as the road went further out of town. That's when the rampaging,
brain-damaged
Zoanoid took her by surprise.

Swerving out of the way, she crashed into a tree, sending Shinji flying
through the
windshield, and into the ground a few feet away, where he landed
face-first on the
Evanguyverlion unit.

The metal bindings flew open, causing ropy tendrils to wrap themselves
around his body.
Screaming in pain, he wandered blindly until he fell in a nearby lake.

Misato came to a few minutes later, as someone was pulling her out her
car.

"Mmmnnnnffff?" she mumbled, trying to clear her pounding head.

"Shhhhhh... be quiet. Do you want them to catch us?" whispered a voice.

"Shinji?" asked Misato, slowly opening her eyes now that the pain was
starting to subside.

"No. My name's Kensuke. Is Shinji with you?"

Misato sat up and blinked a few times. "He-he was in the --car and oh
no!"

A shadow fell over them. "This must be my lucky day. A witness and a
courier. Where is
the unit?" asked the man, in a manner that was all menace.

 "Taaargon! Report!"

Taaargon turned about face, and replied, "Sir! I have caught up with
the witness, and, as a bonus, I've also found one of the couriers."

"Very good. Have you questioned the courier?"

"Sir! I was in the process of doing just that, Sir!"

 "Good. Carry on."

Turning around, Taaargon reached down, and picked up Misato by the
collar. "Alright,
where is the unit? Tell me, and maybe you'll die with as little pain as
possible."

A drop of blood spilled down Misato's lip and chin. Grinning weakly,
she replied, "I-it's
been activated. You'll never get it back." and then she passed out.

"Sir, she's passed out, and said something about the unit being
activated. Do you have any
orders?"

"Hmmmm... Very well. Throw the two of them to Gregore for disposal.
Then search the
car."

A smile crossed Taaargon's lips. Just as he was reaching down for
Kensuke, he stopped.
Looking up, he saw a light coming from the lake that was a few yards
away. Dropping
Misato, he recoiled out of fear of the sheer power he sensed.

Not too far away, Gregore, who had been ripping apart one of the other
men, stopped and
faced the lake.

Then, without warning, something.... cannonballed its way out of the
lake. Landing in a
crouching position, it was seen to be slightly hunchbacked. As water
streamed off of its
purple form, a tail shot out of the base of the hump. It danced as arcs
of electrical energy
rippled up and down its length. Rearing its singly horned head, it
opened its toothy maw and roared. A chrome sphere, located just below
the horn, but directly above its eyes, glowed briefly. Leaping forward,
it somersaulted and its tail lashed out, singeing Gregore's ropy hide.

Reaching out towards the thing that had hurt it, the mindless creature,
who had been
injured in an explosion but minutes earlier, howled in rage and pain.
The horned one deftly
avoided Gregore, landing on one foot behind the beast, leaving it naught
but air to flail
against.

Pivoting on the foot it landed on, the horned one struck out at the
massive beast with a
loose, open handed sweep, causing it to hit the ground, ploughing up
several feet of earth in the process.

While this was going on, the unit's leader watched this new development
with trepidation.

Making his decision, he spoke. "Taaargon! Transform, and assist
Gregore!"

Taaargon, who was also watching the battle, but in fear, nodded
shakily, and replied, "Y-
yes sir."

Stepping away from the others, he began to convulse violently. His
head, which was
distorting at an alarming rate, exploded, revealing a bony-white beaked
maw, with dark,
circular eyeholes. Flesh fell off his hands and arms, exposing black and
white clawed limbs.

A few moments later, Taaargon approached the purple-horned one. He now
had a small,
lithe body that was a deep, dark, pitch black in color. Skeletal plating
jutted out of torso,
arms, and legs. Shrieking maniacally, his movements blurred to normal
eyes, he struck out
at the purple one. Mere seconds later, his movements were cut off dead.
A glowing,
hexagonal ripple flowed in the air beyond his outstretched claws.

 >It can't be!< he cried out, in an inhuman voice.

The thrashing tail lashed out, and knocked him away.

Misato, who had been watching this in terror, finally managed to gasp,
"I-it was all true!
The Evanguyverlion is an awesome, terrible weapon!"

"Cool. But if that's a weapon, who's using it?" asked Kensuke, who was
terribly
impressed by the battle.

 "It...it's Shinji."

"Whaaaat!? Shinji 'The Ghost' Ikari is in that thing? It can't be."
exclaimed Kensuke.

"But it is." replied Misato, smiling.

The Evanguyverlion, now that it had analyzed its opponent, now went in
for the kill.
Taking hold of Gregore's massive tree-trunk-like arms, it twisted its
arms slightly, and the
beast's arms were ripped off at the shoulder. Gallons of thick,
blood-red ichor spewed out of the raw stumps.

Now in a blood-rage, the beast howled even more madly, and backed up
several feet.
Kicking at the ground like an antagonized bull, it snorted and lowered
its head. Charging, it
ran at the Evanguyverlion, who stood his ground.

Reaching out with an outstretched left hand, he grabbed Gregore's horn,
and while
pivoting on his feet, threw the beast. Still keeping ahold of the horn,
he planted his right hand on the beast's shoulder, and pulled. With a
wrenching rip, the beast's head, along with
several feet of spinal cord, were pulled out its body. The beast sank
to ground as more of its thick ichor gushed out onto the ground.

Shifting his attention to Taaargon, he took to the air, bloody trophy
in hand. Taaargon
screamed in horror as Gregore's horny head was rammed into his. Pulling
back his right
hand, now clenched in a tight fist, he punched into Taaargon's chest,
and pulled out a
throbbing blood-red orb. Staring at the gore-encrusted orb in his hand,
the Evanguyverlion
turned his sights to the sky and howled, crushing the orb. Dropping the
now-shattered sphere, allowing the remains of Taaargon fall
unceremoniously to the ground, the Evanguyverlion turned to face the
last of the men, who strode out of the shadows.

"You do well against physical opponents. Let's see how well you do
against me!"

Twitching violently, his shoulders blew up, one after the other. When
the smoke and light
cleared, an armadillo-like humanoid creature with large shell-like
formations on each
shoulder.

 >I am the pinnacle of Zoanoid technology. The Vamore series is
infinitely more powerful
than the Gregore or Taargon series of Zoanoid. Die, Evanguyverlion!<

In a manner not unlike that of a clam, the two massive shoulders
opened, and a blinding
stream of light issued forth, and shot out towards the Evanguyverlion.

Kensuke gasped. "Holy... Those are particle beams!"

Misato hid her face in her hands, not wanting to see what had happened.

 >BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! only SEELE has the technology to
create biologically powered energy weapons! What!? No! It can't be!<

Out in the smoke created by the boiling of the very air by the particle
beam, a light issued
forth. Moments later, it was revealed to be the left eye of the
Evanguyverlion.

As the chrome sphere on its forehead gleamed momentarily, the
Evanguyverlion grasped its chest, and opened it. Below the chest, a
triangularly-shaped plate opened as well, revealing another chrome orb,
and two circular areas that began to glow with an eerie power. The
larger orb gleamed for a moment, as two spherical charges formed in the
chest cavity.

 >No! I-it can't be! It has particle beams! I-I must No, I need more
tiiiiiiiiiimmmmm--<
screamed Vamore as twin pulses lanced out and hit him, annihilating him
utterly.

Regarding the ashes that were once Vamore, the two orbs on the
Evanguyverlion gleamed. As he roared in victory, the tail retracted
into the hump on his back. Closing the chest panels, he began to shake
his head.

Kensuke rose and ran over to him. "That was amazing, Shinji! How did you
do that?"

*Huh? Kensuke? What happened? Why is my head ringing?* asked Shinji,
looking at
Kensuke.

"You don't remember? You just took out three monsters. It was so cool!"
gushed
Kensuke.

Shinji looked down at his hands. *What happened to my hands? What
happened to... me?*

Kensuke opened a pouch on his waist, and pulled out a shaving mirror.
"This is what you
look like."

Staring at the reflection that stared back at him Shinji thought, (Then
it is true. He
was right. I am a monster....) Memories flashed behind his eyes. (No. I
will not listen. I do
not know who or what I am, but I am not a monster. I....) He slumped to
his knees,
exhausted far more than he could imagine. As he descended, the
Evanguyverlion separated from him, and floated in the air. Kensuke
looked on in awe as it sank beneath the lake.

Draping one of Shinji's arms around his neck, Kensuke dragged him over
to where Misato
lay, curled into a fetal ball. Setting Shinji next to her, he shook her
shoulder and said,

"Misato, it's over. We're alive. We're all alive. But what do we do
now?"

Uncurling a bit, Misato looked up and said, "S-shinji? Is he--"

Kensuke nodded, and pointed where the unconscious young man lay.

Misato smiled, happy that Shinji wasn't hurt.

 "What should we do now?"

Biting her lip, Misato thought it over. "Do you have a First-aid kit?"

 "Yes, why?"

"I need to get patched up. Then we should see if my car will still run.
After that, I don't
know."

"Okay. I'll go and pack up my camp. Shinji should be out for a while.
He's been through a
lot. I'll be back in a couple of minutes." said Kensuke, as he rose, and
walked out into the
woods.

Misato let out a deep breath and sat back. Reaching over, she mussed
his hair a bit, and
smiled. (He was right. Shinji's a tough kid. I only hope he can survive
long enough to meet
his father. That is, if he survives as well.)

"Tell me, Mr. Kaji, what the hell happened out there, and why is it we
have only a single
Evanguyverlion unit to show for this operation? And a damaged one at
that?"

/Commander Fuyutsuki, let it be known that I wash my hands of this
operation./

"So be it. Now tell me what happened." said Fuyutsuki, as he watched
the sun set through
the massive storm windows in his penthouse office.

/The injured Zoanoid is the fault of one of the NERV defectors, a
Misato Katsuragi. She
ran down a Ramoches model, who pursuing a witness./

"A witness?" asked Fuyutsuki, pushing his chair back from his massive
desk of mirrored
obsidian.

/Yeah, a kid. Reported at being somewhere between thirteen and fourteen
years of age.
The boy was wearing a summer middle school uniform. One thing I can say
about your
Zoanoids, although they don't know tactics from a hole in the ground,
they make some
decent observations./ replied Kaji.

"Very well, Mister Kaji. Investigate any middle schools in the area of
the sighting. Now
continue your report, starting with how the unit was damaged."

/Not much to say about that sir. Ikari's courier for that unit, an
unfinished Mahlmut unit
was carrying an explosive. A nasty piece of work, I must say. To
continue, the explosion
damaged the unit, and effectively eliminated the Gregore, although
nobody could get close
enough to tell him that./

"Brain damage?" (Damn. This is bad. I'll have to personally deal with
such an obvious
flaw in the system. Perhaps I should discontinue the Mahlmut series
while I'm at it as well. Damn things were too unpredictable anyway.)

/You got it, sir. Apparently, Katsuragi's car came across the Gregore
and crashed into a
tree. A Taargon found Katsuragi and another witness, a boy around the
same age as the first near the wreckage of the car. The first bot was
nowhere to be seen./

"You have a description of this boy as well?" asked Fuyutsuki, silently
cursing to himself.

/It'll be in my final report sir. Things got fuzzy from there, but I
think I know what
happened. The first boy somehow activated the unit Katsuragi was
carrying and disappeared thereafter. That's when the Taargon found the
others. The Taargon was ordered to fall back when the Gregore wandered
by. When the Gregore was about to deal with the two, something leapt out
of the nearby lake, and charged the Gregore. It took it out in just
under a minute--/

 "ONE MINUTE!?!?" roared Fuyutsuki

/That's what the Vamore said. After it dealt with the Gregore, the
Taargon, which had
been ordered in by the Vamore, was promptly taken down in ten seconds
flat./

"Ten seconds!? Was it the unit?" (This is beyond bad. Kiel's gonna have
a flock of sheep
when he hears this.) thought Fuyutsuki.

/That's nothing. It withstood the Vamore's particle beams. Must be a
forcefield of some
sort. I can only deduce that the unit had more powerful beams, as the
Vamore was cut off
then./

"I... see. What is the condition of the other unit?"

/It's still in one piece. The outer bindings are pitted in a few
places, but are holding out
okay. What's got me worried is that there's a nasty dent in the control
metal./

"Very well, Mister Kaji. Bring the unit in for examination. And Mister
Kaji--"

 /Yes, sir?/

"Make sure everything is in the report. Make sure of it."

/Understood. One last thing, sir. I won't volunteer to use that thing./

"Not a problem. SEELE is sending someone to investigate yesterdays
transgressions. He
will most likely volunteer himself. As it stands, our illustrious
president's days are
numbered."

/Sir. I hope things go well for you./

"Right. Fuyutsuki out." cutting the circuit off, he leaned back the
chair, propping his feet
on the desk. (Hmmm.... I wonder, could it be no. It's too early to be
making predictions.
Still, I wonder if we'll ever find a reason for all this madness.)
