My guess would be that some times it's not the will that counts but the
adaptability of the person.  Genma had accepted his curse in the anime as
far as I can see.  Hell, he even seemed to be able to change at will.  A
strong willed person who belived there was no cure (and I believe she was
consided dead by her tribe also) may just lose it while someone who could
roll with the punches, adapt, and make do could just go "Oh well..." and
get on with life.  Also she would not have any support but Moose while
ranma sort of had Genma and Ryouga.
