I'll accept your definition for purposes of discussion (I'm not a
terminology whiz myself); my point is that a lot of fics -- this one
included -- DO treat Ranma and Ukyo as if they had this sort of
friendship, while AFAIK there's no evidence for it in the manga.

 Of course, you are entitled to your opinion, but I was compelled to 
respond. Perhaps your own definition of 'best friend' may be in order so 
I may understand where you're coming from. 

It's not really a matter of which definition of "best friend" you use.
The point is, I don't see any evidence in the manga that Ukyo fits your
definition, or any other reasonable one. If you can point me to some
scenes that show this, please do; you might convince me to retract my
statement. (And please point them out by *private E-mail,* as this
thread's getting way too spammy.)
