That's a common misconception. Gandalf's precise words were:
 
"It has been said that dragon-fire could melt and consume the Rings of Power,
but there is not now any dragon left on earth in which the old fire is hot
enough; nor was there ever any dragon, not even Ancalagon the Black, who could
have harmed the One Ring, the Ruling Ring, for that was made by Sauron
himself." 

The ONLY way to destroy the One is to drop it into a volcano. Nothing else
even remotely comes close.
Actually, the only way to destroy it was to drop it into the -specific-
volcano where it was forged.
No other volcano would work, and that one only worked because it was where
the ring was *made* - a sort of 
magical significance applied: It could only be destroyed in the same place
it was constructed.
Nothing else would work.  You could have droped it into the -sun- and it
wouldn't melt.
But that mountain (who's name I can't recall or spell) would.  I believe
that was a condition that Sauron worked into it on it's construction.
