I think you should be allowed to change histories.  Even authors
occasionally toy with this.  Comic companies like Marvel have had What Ifs
for years and DC has always had its elseworlds.  Of course, I doubt the
original authors would ever "approve" of an alternate history.  It might
make an interesting read.

No, people tend to continually look book to old topics. Plus, not all of
Ranma has ever really reached the states in translated form.  Some people
are just beginning to enjoy the anime/manga most people on this list have
already finished.

I haven't really read that much on Oh! My goddess! and I never had a chance
to watch the anime(yet).  Does 20 reflect the period when Ranma was found to
the present?  This is what it seems like from the author's work.  Then Ran
must be at least 25 or so...

Though, unlike Skuld, she has an excuse to tell people not to treat her
like a kid.

Nice try but it doesn't work that way. There is documented evidence that
altering a child's sex and expecting them to grow up accepting their new
sex is a fuitle exercise. The body "knows" what sex its supposed to be and
will push the mind in that direction.
The only concivable way I can see this happening is via magic. Enough of it
to alter Ranma at the biochemical level.

We don't know how Ranma's curse works. It might be on the biochemical level.
Of course, the question is whether a soul has a gender.  If Ran's soul is
male, there might be some interesting side effects(especially when he meets
Akane)  which probably wouldn't have shown up earlier.
