Quite frankly don't know where this came from at all... I was gonna do
something VERY different from this -- a la a X-over galore comedy, but...
well, should I bother continuing? ^^;;
=====
It is a clear, sunny day, one absolutely perfect for flying.
---
"You're kidding. Please tell me that this is a joke."
"I kid you not, m'darling. Tell the mayor I need to speak with him. "
"How fast is it spreading?"
"Pretty damn quickly, from all my tests. I just discovered that it's
incredibly contagious, and that touch is all the contact needed to pass it
on."
"You don't mean-"
"Yup. And, even if a person's not affected, they have a good chance of
being a carrier."
"Shit."
"My sentiments exactly, Mary."
"John... I just thought of something."
"What?"
"If this... virus or whatever it is -- if this does what you said it does-"
"Yeah?"
"Think we're gonna need to dodge falling angels?"
---
I smile and spread my wings, lifting quickly to aim toward the silver
city, high in the clouds.
---
"Mr. Mayor, this situation obviously demands that you make this city a
no-fly zone until the crisis can be contained!"
"Detective Lee, do you realize what my constituents in C-9 would say?"
"Sir, with all due respect -- when they start falling out of their perches,
I think they'll listen."
"Is it really that bad, Mary?"
"Call John. He'll tell you what's been happening. From the little that he's
been able to discover, we've got something here that will get really messy
if we don't try to isolate every case immediately."
"How bad is this thing going to get?"
"It depends on how many are infected already... Worse case, you won't have
to worry about Cloud Nine. Ever."
"I'll call Dr. Mira and then issue the order -- he'd better have some
strong evidence. Tell my staff to come in now, please? I think we've got a
lot of work ahead of us if this thing turns out to be true."
---
As I get nearer to C-9, I see some of my friends also coming in from
various districts of Crossroads, and I can't help but wonder where Triel is.
---
"This is Channel Nine News, with a special bulletin. The Mayor has just
announced that of this moment, Crossroads is a no-fly zone. If anyone is
seen flying above the city limits, they will be escorted down by police
patrols and taken to a special detention center. We repeat -- this city is
currently a no-fly zone. Now, we take you to the press conference at which
the Mayor has promised to explain why he has taken such a drastic step."
---
I frown as I feel something out of place... a shooting pain in my wings...
---
"Ladies and gentlemen of the press, please ask your questions after-"
"Mr. Mayor, Anna Tanaka of the Aerial Messenger. I think that most of us
have one question -- what has made you issue such an insane order? Speaking
for myself and all the others who you have effectively grounded and
crippled, we would like to know what explaination you have for this
irresponsible and-"
"Ms. Tanaka, please. Let me explain the situation. This is Doctor John
Mira, a very respected pathologist. He has discovered something alarming,
and thought that this no-fly edict would be the best way to minimize
casualties. Doctor, if you would."
"Thank you, Mr. Mayor. Everyone, please give me your undivided attention,
and try not to panic. There is a large possibility that a highly contagious
disease has been spreading through the city. How long, we don't know, but
we have just discovered what it can do after incubating for an unknown
window period."
"Doctor, what-"
"Doctor Mira!"
"Please! Everyone, sit down. I need for all of you to react calmly and
rationally to this crisis, before it becomes an epidemic. We have tried to
investigate just where this disease comes from, or what exactly it does,
but we have not been successful. All we know is that it is spread by touch,
and may also have magical origin. It has come upon us too fast to be just a
disease, but it is not merely a curse. The city's defenses would have
picked that up immediately."
"Doctor! Why the no-fly zone?"
"Ms. Tanaka, please. As I was saying... this might also account for why the
disease is so particular in what it does. It affects winged beings --
angels, demons, modified humans, whoever -- by making it so that their
wings lose their functionality. Bluntly speaking, the disease effectively
cripples all winged beings by destroying whatever helps them fly. The bone
structure seems to be weakened in a space of barely an hour to such a state
that the wings can barely keep their shape, and-"
"What-"
"How is that possible?!"
"Who would-"
"Everyone! We are trying to get as much of that information as possible.
For now, you all need to inform the public about this, and make sure that
they don't panic. That would be the worst thing right now."
"Doctor... why are you coming out with this information now?"
"Because... five beings who seem to be in the advanced stage this disease
have been discovered. Thankfully, the two angels were near my research
facility when they fell, and the two demons came in complaining of wing
pain and trouble. However, yesterday... a birdling fell from too high, and
died before he reached the hospital. From Falconite Triel's death, I
concluded that if any had gotten infected at the same time, they were at
risk. Taking into account the highly contagious nature of this disease,
that number might be too high to justify trying to not panic everyone. This
is clearly a situation where they would be justified..."
---
Are those my feathers I see drifting before my eyes as the air takes them
away leaving me with nothing to hold me up as I start to fall so close to
the silver city and I want to cry out but I can't because there's so much
pain my wings are breaking they've snapped and the
