Hi Everybody!
Big Bore winces when everyone yells back....he winces more as the yelling
goes on......finally he resorts to pulling out a .470 Nitro Express and
shooting both barrels into the air--at the same time....by the time he
comes to, he sees that everyone is quiet and paying attention to what he is
about to say.
A while ago, I posted a teaser about a Ranma/Robotech crossover. I haven't
finished the fic, but I did get a fair amount of C&C on the teaser. The
biggest thing that sticks in my mind was Richard Lawson's comment to dump
the way I have Ranma and Ryouga end up in the Robotech universe. He said
that the Washu method of dimensional crossovers was overused and cliched.
That got me to thinking (a rare occurence) that maybe there were others
besides me that have trouble coming up with good ideas for how to get
characters from one universe into another, particularly when (like in a
Robotech/Ranma crossover) you want to use the original characters in a
universe that would completley contradict the characters existing in the
first place!
Then I got to talking to my friend Phoniexhawk about a Role Playing Game he
had. It was called "Tales From the Floating Vagabond". Now the Vagabond
is a bar that floats in a seperate dimesion. Buissnes was poor so the
owner Hawk Luger (call him Spit) installed a neat little device. It is a
random portal generator. What it does is everytime a door opens in another
bar somewhere in any of the dimensions, there is a very, very small chance
that the person traversing that door will end up in the Vagabond instead.
Since the first thing such a person does is order a lot of very strong
drinks, Hawk's buisness has grown exponentially. Therefore, we come to the
meat of the post.
This makes for a very convient crossover generator. There are people in
the vagabond that like to hire others to do something in the various
dimensions. Sometimes this is a harmless little trip, other times
something major like fomenting a rebellion. All you have to do is come up
with a reason for your characters to go into a bar in their universe, and
"poof" they are at the vagabond and ready to venture onward!
I've already written a couple of ideas up for this method. I'm still
undecided whether I should use the vagabond or come up with my own bar
along the same basic lines. However, I'm not a selfish person. I think
such a neat idea can be shared! If anyone would like a more detailed
description of the vagabond or the mechanics(?) of the place, please email
myself or Phoniexhawk. If you'd like, we could even help out a bit with an
idea or the setting inside the vagabond.
Well, what do you think? Let me know!
Later!
