Hmm, you can always take the epic path and do both within the same fanfic.  Start off characterizing everyone as they are in the anime/manga and allow events to make them more "3-D" which allows you to explore new areas of their personalities while keeping true to the original at the same time.

Just my two cents worth, anyway.
