	I was undecided about them; I finally made the decision to
include them to reinforce the narrative tone I'm aiming for:
mock-serious and somdewhat detached or dispassionate.  In addition, I
originally had a payoff in mind for them, along the line.

	I've been thinking about rewriting the previous chapters with
minor alterations, and eliminating the footnotes.  I'm not sure it
would make much of a difference to the fic as a whole, though, and I'm
afraid it would confuse people a bit if I suddenly switched at this
point.
