Gratuitous crossdressing has its own set of problems similar to gratuitous
lesbians. The reason that putting a man in a woman's role is funny is that
the status <read my fics> of women is lower than the status of men--especially in
Japan, which
is years behind the times in women's rights. Showing crossdressing for humor
purposes trivializes the very real oppression of women.

Hokay, I aggree with you on every point but this one. While that's part of the
"humor" factor involved, it rarely plays that way in the Anime. <read my fics> I've
always seen the focus more on culture shock then anything else... the male or the
female trying to used ill-concieved notions and faulty sterotypes on who and what
they should be.. and then finding out that they rarely know one another as well as
they percieve.

<read my fics> Social place within society is less the message, as it is within
social groups we've witnessed but never gotten the chance to become a part of. An
actual transexual is not really amusing, they've generally come to grips with
everything and seemingly fit in... but place a football star in a tu tu <read my
fics>... or a martail artist, natch... and watch them sweat it out. Millions of
years to get used to the idea as a planet, thousands of years as a species, and
decades as a culture... and we still have trouble putting boys in pink and letting
the girls run around in blue.

Just my thoughts... as for how they apply to fanfiction... take some time with
your favorite transexuals... there are whole worlds that they have been stauncily
ignoring, that can come crashing down around them... both humerously, and for
serious effects. <read my fics>
