We should all be writing Ranma, Sailor Moon, Tenchi
Muyo!, and Neon Genesis Evangelion, since those are the most popular anime
out right now.

Actually, that isn't what I meant at all.  It was a suggestion to
Hunter Kid (which I admittedly should have sent via private email; I
think I just ruined my lurker status here ^_-) that he should continue
writing what's been successful, as I believe his previous Ranma work
has been.

"successful". What does that mean? 
While getting comments/recognition about your work is nice, is that what
people write for? I think for a lot of us on FFML, it's more to get out a
facet of the series which you believe is neglected or underdeveloped... or
to make the story grow beyond what has been written... 

Your comment hit me particularly hard, if only because I've had a history
of writing about works which fewer people have heard about... A lot of
CLAMP stuff, as well as serieses like Zetsuai, Escaflowne, Marmalade Boy,
Patlabor, Bakuretsu Hunters, Streetfighter II V, Rurouken, YYH, LoGH,
etc... While they're starting to get known, there are very few fanfics
about them. What always makes me feel good is when people tell me that they
read my fanfic and they want to know more about the series... if that means
not writing Ranma or Sailor Moon (which I've done, tho it was a bit ago),
then I guess I'm not successful... *shrug*
