The stories don't just continue the series in two different ways, they make
different statements about what the series was like all along.

  
I thought I covered that in my previous post. There IS NO DIFFERENCE between
the interpretations, because there doesn't *need* to be; you can go either way
from the end of the series. You can go the way where Akane's hitting elevates
into something more deadly, or you can go the way where she stops hitting him
altogether. You don't need to interpret the series differently for either; it
works both ways.
