Very unique, very interesting to follow.  I do think that not letting us
know who it's about detracts from the appreciation of the message---the
story has completely different meanings on first and second read.  

As to the identity of the observer, which someone else brought up...does it
matter?  FWIW, it could make for an excellent 'Jed' Returns fanfic...
