now on with the show.

Prologue

When the world was new, the seven Gods dwelt in harmony, and the races
of man were as one people. Belar, the youngest of the gods, was beloved
by the Alorns. He lived with them and cherished them, and they prospered
in his care. The other Gods also gathered peoples about them,
and each god cherished his own people.
Belar's eldest brother, Aldur, took no people as his own. And he dwelt
apart
from the realms of man existing only with the animals in nature. Until one
day a young man came to him to seek knowledge and to learn from him. Aldur
accepted the man as his disciple and named him Genma(or would you prefer
Belgenma for continuity's sake). He taught Genma the secrets of the Will
and the Way, and introduced to him the pure natural beauty of martial arts.
And through these teachings Genma became the first sorcerer. In the
following years many others sought out the solitary god to become his
disciples, those that the god accepted joined at his feet in brotherhood to
learn from him, and time did not touch them.
Now it came to pass that Aldur took up a stone no larger than a childs
heart. He turned the stone in his hand until it became smooth as the
surface of the lake at dawn, and the breathed the force of life into it.
It had a soul and shown with the pure light of innocence. The power
of the living jewel, which mortals called the Orb of Aldur, was immeasurable
and Aldur worked wonders with its power.
Now of all the gods Happosai was the most beautiful(imagine how Happosai
sees himself when he was younger), and his people were the Angaraks. They
burned sacrifices of that which is worn close to the heart(as well as the
heart), and they called him the Lord of all Lords. When he heard of this
object
of power in his brother's possession, he was immediately seized with an
immense jealousy. He went to cajole the Orb from Aldur with honeyed words
and false confidences.
Aldur, seeing the darkness that had inhabited the soul of his brother
Happosai, replied, "Why dost thou seek lordship and dominion? Is not the
praise of thy peoples and thy lands enough for thee? I plead with you,
do not in thy pride seek to possess the orb, for in thy pride it shall
surely slay thee."
Upon hearing this, Happosai's wrath was ignited and he did strike his
brother
and take the orb.
The other gods pleaded with Happosai to return the orb to their brother,
but he turned a deaf ear to them. Then in desperation the races of man
rose up against the hordes of Angarak and made war against them. The wars
of man and gods raged until, at the high places of Korim, Happosai raised up
the Orb and smote the land asunder with its power. The sea came in where
once there were mountains, but Aldur and Belar combined their wills and
put limits upon the sea.
Now Happosai's use of the living jewel against its mother greatly
upset the Orb and it woke with a fury and struck out against that which
its user held most dear. Azure fire enshrouded the God and seared away the
years on his appearance, disfiguring him greatly.(Happosai as we all know and
love him) In a wretched pain he lead his hordes to the plains of Malorea
where they erected a tower of iron and built a city about it named
Cthol Mishrak, the city of night. Happosai hid in the darkness that
surrounded the city and carried out unspeakable acts against its populace
in his wrath. The Orb was placed in an iron cask which Happosai could only
gaze upon for fear of what it would do upon his touch.
Centuries passed as they are want to do, and the Angaraks came to call
their disfigured God Kal-Happosai, he who is both king and god.
All was undisturbed until Cherek Bear-shoulders, the greatest king of the
Alorns, traveled to the Vale of Aldur to seek Genma the Sorcerer. He told
of the auguries he had read that told the way to the city of the night was
open and it was possible to take back that which was stolen from his master.
Poledra(Nodoka is to be aunt Pol) Genmas wife was with child so he was loth
to leave her. However Cherek prevailed. One night they left to join
Cherek's
sons Dras Bull-neck, Algar Fleet-foot, and Riva Iron-grip.
A cruel winter gripped the north that season, and the moors shone like
steel under the winter stars. To lead them Genma took the form of a
great bear(any better ideas). He lead them unseen to Cthol Mishark in to the
iron tower itself. They reached the orb and with Happosai asleep, horribly
disfigured from his previous beauty.
King Cherek motioned Genma to take the orb. But he protested "Only one
without ill will may touch it. For once it welcomed any touch, but now
its soul has been steeled against the evils of man and god. Now it reads
one's soul to see that it is not used against its mother again."
Cherek despaired, saying, "Who among us has no ill intent somewhere upon
his soul?" At that point Riva Iron-grip moved forward and took up the Orb;
its fire shone forth from his fingers but he was untouched.
"So be it, said Genma, It shall be the doom of you and all your line to
protect the
orb, Riva." After this they stole away from the city as quietly as possible.
However, Happosai soon awoke and went to his torture and pleasure, to look
upon the Orb that he could never possess. When he found it missing, he
roused his army and pursued the thieves.
Using the light of the Orb, which was awakened by those who it perceived as
its enemies, to keep back the host, Genma and his companions were able to
make it back to the Kingdoms of the west safely.
Now the Gods knew all that had transpired, and held council, and Aldur
advised them. "If we wage war upon our brother surely we will destroy this
world that we have made. Thus we must absence ourselves from our dear
creation so that our brother may not find us. We may never again visit our
peoples in the flesh but only in spirit may we come. For the sake of our
creation it must be so. For on the day when we wage war again surely the
world will be unmade."
The assembled Gods wept that they must depart. But Chaldan, Bull-God of
the
Arends, asked, In our absence will not Happosai have dominion over all?"
"Not so, Aldur replied, So long as the Orb remains in the possession of
the
line of Riva Iron-grip, Happosai shall not prevail."
So it was that the gods sadly departed, and only Happosai remained. But
the knowledge of the orb in the hands of the line of Riva was as a canker in
his black soul.
Aloria was split among Cherek's three sons. Dras went north and dwelt in
the lands drained by the River Mrin. He built a city called Boktor and named
his lands Drasnia. He and his descendants stood to defend the northern
marches
to deny them to the enemy. Algar went south to the plains by the Aldur river
and
found upon them horses. These he tamed and learned to ride
and for the first time in history of man, mounted warriors appeared. Their
country was named Algaria, and was populated by nomads following their herds.
Cherek Returned sadly to Val Alorn and renamed his diminished kingdom Cherek,
for now he was without sons and alone. He grimly builds ships of war to
patrol the seas for the enemy.
Riva, the bearer of the Orb, had a longer journey however. He was to
take his people to the west coast of Japan(Sendaria) and settle his people
upon the isle of the winds. He there built his kingdom, Riva, and carved his
fortress city, Tokyo, out of the granite of the mountains. Then Belar, God
of
the Alorns, caused two stars to fall from the sky. Riva took up one and
forged a blade from one and a hilt from the other, setting upon it as the
pommel stone the Orb. The blade was so large that none but Riva could
wield it. Across the sea Happosai felt, in his soul the forging of the
blade, and for the first time he felt fear settle into his heart.
The blade was set against the black stone above the throne so that none but
Riva could remove it. The Orb burned with a cold fire whenever he sat upon
the throne. And when he took down his sword and raised it, it became a great
pillar of cold fire.
The greatest of all wonders was the mark on the right hand of Riva's heir.
Once in each generation, one child in the line of Riva bore upon their palm
the mark of the orb. The child marked was taken to the throne room, and in a
ceremony his hand was placed upon the orb so that it may know them. With
each touch the Orb waxed in brilliance, strengthening the bond between the
orb and the house of Riva.
After Genma had parted from his companions he hastened to the Vale of
Aldur.
There he found his wife Poledra had borne him twin daughters,
but had then died. He named the elder Nodoka. Her hair was brown, and in
the fashion of sorcerers, he stretched forth his hand and laid it upon her
brow. Where his hand touched a single lock at her forehead turned a snowy
white. This troubled him for the white lock was the mark of sorcerers,
and Nodoka was the first female child to be marked so.
His second daughter, fair skinned and unmarked, was named Beldaran. He and
Nodoka loved her with all of their hearts, and contended with each other for
her affections.
When Nodoka and Beldaran reached their sixteenth year, Aldur came to Genma
and said to him, My beloved disciple, I would join your house and that of
the house of the guardian of the Orb. Choose which of thy daughters is to
wed the Rivan King, for in that line will lie the hope of the world, against
which the dark power of my brother Happosai may never prevail."
In the silence of his soul, Genma was tempted to chose Nodoka to wed the
Rivan King and keep Beldaran with him. But instead he sent Beldaran, and
wept at her departure. And Nodoka also wept, knowing that while her sister
shall fade and die she shall live on unchanged. In time, however, they
(Yes people the they reffers to Nodoka and Genma, sorry it will be made clear
in my
rewrite) came to know each other and comforted each other in their grief.
They joined their powers to keep watch over Happosai. And some men say
that they abide still, keeping their vigil through all the uncounted
centuries.

Ok so this wasn't that original, but it was just the background work and
I found it rather difficult to change. But I plan on changing things
rather drastically by about chapter four(in the book).

Now more notes. I am in the process of rewriting this to make it a tad bit
more
clear and just plain make everything more clear. Hopefully it will be done
by the
time I get back from christmas break.(but probably it won't)

I would like to thank all of my editors for catching my MANY gramatical, and
spelling errors. (although there are probably still some in there)
