My guess would be that RT didn't much care.  It's really a pretty minor
point, and not crucial to any of the stories, I don't think.  RT probably
simply overlooked it.  Hell, I bet there are people on this ML who know
more about Ranma 1/2 at this point in time than RT does herself (or, more
appropriately, remembers).  

Well, yeah, but it's a standard fan thing to try to explain things in
"internal" terms that you know really have external causes. I remember
long ago people trying to explain in terms of the Star Trek universe
why Number One from The Menagerie (old Star Trek episode) looked so
much like Nurse Chapel. Of course the real reason was that they were
both played by Majel Barrett. (Thankfully there was no Lwxanna Troy
[or whatever the heck her ST:NG character's name was] back then.)

Same with Ranma and Takahashi-sama. In some of her interviews I've
read she's said she was surprised that she had any American readers at
all, since her work has so many Japanese cultural references. I wonder
what she'd think if she knew the depth of her fandom here now; people
like me who take a scene between Soun Tendo and P-Chan that was
probably just put in because it was a funny sight gag, and try to look
for meaning...
