Since we're talking about names...Japanese names at that...I have
some questions.
First: Why is he called Dr. Tofu rather than Dr. Ono? I would
normally refer to my doctor or any of my elders by the
honorific and then the surname.
He seems to be a friend of the family; this may have something to do with
it. It's quite possible that, since he's been treating them since they
were kids, it's something like a pet name. Like, say, Doctor Bob...
Second: Do Japanese women take on the family names of their
husbands?
For the most part, yes. However, it is worth noting that in situations
where a family business stands to be inherited, the son-in-law marrying
into a family may take on the woman's surname; he is considered an
"adopted" husband. Modern times, of course -- people make up their own
minds.
In my book, this means when Ranma and Akane get married, *he'll* have
to make the choice whether or not to become Ranma Tendo, since the Tendo
Dojo is what needs to be carried on.... There could be a great battle of
wills over that one...
