Yeah, it's called a notpad for windows. Or Wordpad for windows, if you're
going to write a long story.
Dos version? Man those text based OS are over. GUI's are the cutting edge.
GUI-based text editors have a lot of fine tools. What they're lousy at is
making sure that your documents are only x-number of characters across rather
than y-number of inches. This is very much needed for anything to be posted to
the net since the standard document width is 80 characters (preferrably 70),
rather than 7" or whatever else you have your Windows/Mac word processor set
at.
What do I do? I write the document in question in Works forWindows, export to
text (which leaves the resulting text unformatted without line breaks), run it
through WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS to force the document to the necessary
character width, then check over it in DOS Edit to make sure extra line breaks
are taken out (usually occurs where a page break was) and inserting line breaks
where needed. An inelegant solution, but necessary until word processor
publishers get it through their fool heads that character-width limits are
still desireable among some (especially since said publishers put HTML features
into those programs at the same time...).
