The American constitution works EVERYWHERE...  scary.  But we Canadians just play along with them...  until they cut off our cigar supply or steal our hockey teams!!

what they *deserve* not what actually happens.

Actually, whether the law says this or that IS the point...  Laws are generally moderate; they come about because of a disagreement over something.  Law is based on a collection of what people think a criminal deserves, so there will always be some disagreement from extremists (like yourself, and myself).  As much as you'd like to apply the *groan* garlic press, it just won't happen.  The majority has already stated the punishment, and unless we can change a lot of minds, the criminal WON'T get what he deserves.

Though I think the garlic press is going just a little too far.

I also think this is a good thread to keep on the ML... no, it doesn't have anything to do with anime fanfiction, but it might give writers a lot of good ideas.  And we all might learn something.
