Excuse me! There is nothing wrong with being Shampoo-like...
Dumb hair. Does she dye it purple? With hair that long, I'd imagine
having to shampoo it, not to mention dying it, would be a considerable pain.

Dye her hair? Is there anything in the Anime/manga to make you think
that SHampoo dyes her hair?? Her hair-color seems no less natural than
Ranma-chan's fire-engine red hair, in the anime. In the manga her hair
is black, like everyone elses. :-)

does not make you really intelligent...If Shampoo cant speak very well ..
It's because CHINESE is her first language...I'd like to see the
Chinese is the first language of Mousse and Cologne, too, but they have
no accent. Obviously, her accent is a sign of stupidity and bimbo-ness. ^_^

Accents aren't stupid! Besides, maybe Mousse and Cologne just studied
Japanese before they knew they would ever go to Japan, while Shampoo studied
some other language instead. Shampoo hatte gelernet Deutsch vielleicht.
Happens all the time in real life.

I read somewhere that it was supposed to make her seem weaker and hence more
attractive to the Japanese male audience of the manga.

that all the characters in Ranma1/2 ..like the important ones,
must have more than a 1 dimensional character...or else how could
they possibly have stayed on the manga for so long?
Because the manga can get pretty bad.
A LOT of the characters have one dimensional characters. You can infer
another dimension into the characters of Kasumi, Nabiki, Kodachi,
Happosai, so on, and most fanfics try to do that, but in the manga it's not
there.
You can infer extra-depth into any character you choose to (or have your
arm twisted about ^_^). You can usually tell pretty easily which
characters are authors favourites.
Shampoo gets a particularly bad press, though it's mainly because 90% of
fanfic authors simply don't use Kodachi I suspect. Of the regular
cast, Shampoo is usually the one that gets cast as the villan - Shampoo
is shown as self-centered but competant at what she does, while Kodachi
is shown as self-centered and as crazy as a loon.

Heck, everybody, even Ranma and Akane, have one-dimensional characters in
the early Nettouhen and the later mangas. You can describe their
personalities in five words or less. That's no good!

But it makes fanfics easier to write!

But is easier better? And if you have to put in more of the
characterisation, *DOES* it make it easier?

Still in the end Fanfics are subjective. A good fanfic is one you
enjoy. I've read Fanfics that I loathed, but I've seen other people
praise them as if they were shakespearean masterpieces.
